Melinda Kirk from SA highlights the benefits of how using
baby sign with early spoken communication helped her to
identify what it is her son Josh is actually trying to say.
"Hi Jackie,
I just wanted to let you know what an amazing thing
signing has been for us. We started signing with our son
Joshua when he was about 8 months old and now, at 18 months
he has mastered about twenty signs, with milk, car and food
being the most frequently used.. in that order. What has
interested me the most is that now he is speaking well -
about 50 words - the signing hasn't slowed him down at all.
Instead he is combining signs and his words to say more.
For example, he will sign food and meow to tell me that
our cat is eating his food!
The other benefit is the signs are helping me understand
his attempts at words, we know that 'bis!' 'bis!' Ta! means
biscuit please because it was accompanied by the eat sign.
So thanks Jackie, Baby Hands has bought so much to our family.
Attached are some photos of Josh below. The Up and
Milk go together, used when he is asking to stand on the
bench and watch his milk warming in the microwave."
