This interesting story helped inspire
my article for this month, Auslan
or ASL? Whats The Best Baby Sign Language? Thanks to
Kathy and little Jack and well done for doing your research
:-)
"Jack is our youngest child (15 months).
I'd heard about baby sign language years before but never
knew where to learn how to do it.
I stumbled upon an American program on DVD and was about
to buy it online when I realised it was based on the US
sign language for the deaf. I thought there surely must
be a program based on Auslan? After a google search, I found
Australian Baby Hands and ordered the DVD and poster.
We're very busy in our home as I homeschool the 4 older
children (17, 15, 8 & 6) but we found time to play the
DVD through a couple of times. Jack actually sat and paid
attention to Jackie going through the dictionary of 60 signs
at the end of the DVD. The older children did the signs
along with Jackie and Jack thought that was very funny!
The first sign he's learned so far is "Mum". I
can now say to him "Jack, do the sign for Mum"
and he does it. Last night, I was out at our bible study.
Our oldest told me that when Jack woke up from his nap,
he signed "Mum" and said "Mama" and
was looking around for me. Yay!
I can see how teaching Jack to sign other
words that he can't say yet will make life easier. Less
frustrating for Jack and us. If we are blessed with another
baby, I'll be starting much earlier with teaching sign language.
I love the way the DVD is set out, with the dictionary easily
accessible. Very good product, both in terms of quality
and content."
