"As I have always worked with children with special
needs, when I had my own daughter Tayia, I started signing
with her right away just out of habit.
At 43 weeks she did her first sign, “bird,” followed
closely by “food” of course, and after that she learned
at least 1 sign a week. (Daddy learned 1 sign a week too.
He learns as she does.) I have really noticed the benefits
of baby sign already, as even under 1 year old she was able
to communicate to me what she wants.
One day I was in the kitchen doing dishes while Tayia
was in the living room playing. I heard a little frustrated
cry so started to rinse the soap off my hands.
When I turned around she was standing in the kitchen.
She did the sign for “help” and ran away. I followed her
and the little walker she had been pushing around was stuck
against the door and she couldn’t turn it around.
She pointed at it and again signed “help”. I turned
it around for her and she went off on her merry little way.
I was amazed at how a potentially frustrating and temper-tantrum-producing
situation was easily diffused because she could communicate
with me what she wanted.
She is now 14 months and knows about 25 signs. Sometimes
when she can’t remember a particular sign her little arms
start flailing, pulling out any and every sign she can think
of, hoping that will work, which of course is hilarious
to watch!"
