Hi Suki

I'm not familiar with that condition as my area covers baby sign language more than medical problems in young children.

I did a quick search on Google for <a href="http://www.google.com.au/#hl=en&q=toilet+training+with+Hypospadias&meta=&fp=ef4dae79243053b3" rel="nofollow">toilet training with Hypospadias</a> and there are a variety of answers relating to the condition and when to toilet train.

I would seek advice from your local GP and the doctor who is going to be performing the operation on your son as to how the operation may affect the use of wearing nappies and comfort levels for your son.

Regards

Hi there my son is 8 months old and i would love to start potty trainning with him. The only thing i was wondering about is the fact he a got a condition called 'Hyperspadious' Which is apparently more common than you think 1 in 200 boys born have it (it affects the shape of the willy) he will have surgery for it when he is 12 months old and possibly 1 or 2 more ops when he gets a bit older. The pain and discomfort level would be simillar to that of a circumsision. i am guessing. Do you think i should stat toilet training now and not let that stop us or do you think i should wait until after his ops? i don't want the operation to determin how i raise my son completly and i want to teach him from a young age not to let it stop him. Help please.

Hi Phil

Good tip about using the ability to be able to sit up on their own as a measuring point to being able to use a potty.

That's a really good point about the environmental issue caused by nappies as well. I think many of us in the quest for an "easier life" forget about the impact that we're having on the environment for all sorts of things we do (not just nappies).

As many people really don't want to deal with cloth nappies and the additional washing involved then maybe helping to do some good for the environment might help encourage some early potty training and save on some disposable nappies :-)

My wife & I followed the same rule that our parents used: if a child is old enough to sit up by themselves then they are old enough to sit on the potty. So the potty routine started early. No fuss, it was just part of the daily routine. A sit on the pot straight after waking from any sleep or rest resulted in a show about 90% of the time. Nappy usage was reduced to about 50% - about half of total wee and pooh went into the potty from 7 months onwards. All 3 of our children (2 girls, 1 boy) were out of nappies before their 2nd birthday. Thats got to be good for the environment too.
